Branding Tactics

The terms "brand" is used very loosely in the marketing industry. It is often used as a company or product name (e.g. what brand is this chocolate?). It is also used to refer to the logo and colors of a company. While both of these uses are technically correct, I use it in another sense.

Branding is the process of creating a perception about something in someone's mind. Your brand is how people feel about you.

As you see, it is a very powerful tool. People make life decisions based on emotions, especially when it comes to an emotional topic such as love, dating, and relationships. How she feels about you will decide whether she will go out with you, date you for an extended period, or even fall in love and have a relationship with you. That is why branding is so important.

Decisions about branding should be made only after a well-thought strategy has been created. Your brand should be a manifestation of that strategy. All the choices you made in your strategy will be reflected in your branding process. This includes who to target and how to present yourself to them in a way that is attractive to them and will evoke positive feelings towards you.

I mentioned this before and I will mention it again. You cannot attract everyone. When you make an effort to attract someone, you will inadvertently alienate someone else. If you are trying to attract women who like the color red, then you wear red clothes even if it means the women who prefer blue will ignore you. And that is perfectly OK. You are focused on one special group of women only, your Target Audience. It doesn't matter what women outside of this group think.

So what is involved in branding? Anything that creates a feeling towards you from the women you are trying to attract. And when you encourage them to create an association or feeling with you, make sure it is something they value. It has to be a positive feeling after all. Therefore, as with everything else in your strategy, your brand needs to depend on and be consistent with what your Target Audience values. It doesn't matter who you are or what you do. All that matters is what she thinks of you, and you can influence these thoughts by being consistent with what she values. For example, let's say you are giving a woman your business card. It is a luxurious business card, very elegant looking, and printed on expensive laminated cardboard paper. So, based on the card alone, what is she going to think of you? It depends 100% on what the woman values. If she values wealth and luxury, then she is going to be very impressed and be more attracted to you. If, on the other hand, she is a fun down to earth woman, then she is going to be turned off by your fancy card. If your card was a modest, fun looking card, the effect would have been the opposite on both women.

The best way to view branding is as a promise you are making your potential date. Everything she sees or hears about you is a promise of how her life will be much better if she were your girlfriend. So, you are making her a promise that is in line with what she values. This has to be reflected off of you everytime she sees you or hears about you. Not only that, but equally importantly is that nothing you show her about you gives a hint of anything different. You cannot tell her that you live a life of luxury, and then she comes across a LinkedIn profile of you saying you're looking for a job as a loborer. There has to be consistency, the consistency has to conform to the promise, and the promise has to conform to her values.

Here are things you can do to give a perception of your brand:

  • Your clothes:. Dress according to what you promise.
  • Your social media: All your profiles (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) need to give the same exact message, and highlight the offerings she values. This includes the comments that your friends and followers write about you.
  • Your job: What you do for a living can have an impact on your attractiveness. Are you trying to date a climate activist while you work in the oil industry?
  • Your activities: What you do is an indication for her of who you are. You cannot promise her luxury and then take her to McDonald's for a romantic dinner.
  • Your friends: If she knows your friends or meets your friends, what they say about you has to conform to your brand.
  • Your website: Have a personal website that highlights your offerings. It will be easy for anyone looking you up to find and learn about you exactly what you want to tell them.

These give you a few ideas of how to go about branding yourself. In the end, branding is a personal matter that is different for each individual and each Target Audience. There are a lot of resources about branding that you can lookup and find the ones that work best for you.
